Waswo's MEN OF RAJASTHAN has by now become a bit of a cult classic, and Serindia Contemporary is proud to release this deluxe and expanded hardcover edition. Based on the original paperback edition published in conjunction with an eponymous exhibition at Serindia Gallery, Bangkok, in January of 2011, this updated volume includes new photographs from both the Studio in Rajasthan and the New Myths series'.
American-born photographer Waswo X. Waswo has worked with a team of Indian artists to playfully recreate and examine the tradition of vintage studio portraiture. His chief accomplice is Rajesh Soni, a third generation Rajasthani hand-colourist whose grandfather was court photographer to the Maharana Bhopal Singh of Mewar. Soni's careful and highly skilled painting adds a vintage feel to work that hovers enigmatically between the retro and the contemporary. "Men of Rajasthan" contains 50 images, annotated with delightful commentary by the photographer himself. It uncovers the male-centric universe of a uniquely mysterious place.
Around December of 2002, writer and photographer Waswo X. Waswo gifted his assistant, M. Srinivas Rao, a small digital camera. "A Three Megapixel Journal" tells an intimate, confessional story of the entry of digital photography into the life of a chemical-process, black-and-white "purist." Waswo X. Waswo finds himself becoming more and more fascinated with his assistant's "toy," eventually using the three megapixel to document a journey he and Rao take together through southern India in early 2005. The result is a series of two hundred and seven intriguing photographs, coupled with a compelling tale of an artist's adjustment to new technology.
Writer and photographer Waswo X. Waswo started sending weekly emails to a select group of friends during his stay in Florence and Venice over the winter of the Millennium. What evolved was more than just a personal narrative. The "European Journal" became a humorous collection of cross-cultural anecdotes, political observations, and artistic adventure. It is an intimate guide to expatriate life in Europe, providing casual insights into everything from history to cooking.
